The `Aqidah of Shaykh `Ali bin Abu Bakr al-Sakran

The `Aqidah of Shaykh `Ali bin Abu Bakr al-Sakran is a short but comprehensive summary of the tenets of faith of the Ahl al-Sunnah. It should be recited on a daily basis. Shaykh `Ali composed it to make firm the faith of those that recite it and protect them from deviance so that they meet Allah fully witnessing His oneness. It is particularly beneficial in our time in which the very foundations of our faith are liable to be shaken.

It is widely recited in the mosques of Hadramawt and other regions. It is often recited after the Ratib of Imam al-Haddad before or after the Isha prayer and many people know it by heart. Shaykh `Ali was the brother of Imam `Abdullah al-`Aydarus and one of the great Imams of the Ba `Alawi way. May Allah raise his rank and benefit us by him.

Here we present the Arabic text with translation and transliteration by Sidi Amjad Tarsin. We ask Allah for the ability to recite it and benefit from it. We ask Allah that our last words in this life be la ilaha ill’Allah.

Qubah al-Aydarus

Weekly Ṣalawāt: Yā Ghaffār

We continue our journey through Sayyidī Ḥabīb `Umar’s collection of prayers using Allah’s beautiful names. In this collection, Ḥabīb `Umar calls upon Allah by His beautiful names one by one and then asks Him to bestow prayers upon His Beloved by those names. Finally, he asks Allah for a portion of those attributes which belong to Allah and which He has bestowed upon His Messenger ﷺ. He thus teaches us about the attributes of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and teaches us how to seek a portion of those attributes.

Allāhumma yā Allāhu yā Ghaffār ṣalli `alā `abdika wa ḥabībika sayyidinā Muḥammad an-nabī miftāḥi bābi maghfiratik wa `alā ālihi wa ṣaḥbihi wa sallim tasliman w’aghfirlī bihi mā taqaddama min dhanbī wa mā ta’akhkhara ghufrānā.

O Allāh, O Ever Forgiving, bestow abundant prayers and peace upon Your slave and beloved, our Master Muḥammad, the Prophet, the key to the door of Your forgiveness and upon his Family and Companions, and by him completely forgive me my past and future sins.

On Learning How to Forgive Others

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

How can someone forgive and pardon people who have wronged him?

We can attain praiseworthy traits and rid ourselves of blameworthy traits with a combination of knowledge and action. We should thus remember the greatness of pardoning and forgiving people and the reward for doing so. We should reflect upon examples of the forbearance of the Prophet ﷺ and the pious, love them for the sake of Allah, and then force ourselves to forgive those who have wronged us and to treat them well.

On Adhkar to Ward off the Evil Eye

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

What can I recite to ward off the evil eye?

You can recite:

  1. Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Falaq and Surat al-Nas

  1. These verses of the Qur’an:

Wa in yakadu’lladhina kafaru layuzliqunaka bi absarihim lamma sami’u’ dhikra wa yaquluna innahu lamajnun. Wa ma huwa illa dhikrun lil ‘alamin (Al-Qalam, 68.51-2).

Ma sha’ Allah la quwwata illa billah

Farji`’l-basara hal tara min futur thumma’rji`’l-basara karratayni yanqalib ilayka’l-basara khasi’an wa huwa hasir (Al-Mulk 67:3-4)

  1. These supplications:

U`idhu nafsi bi kalimatillahi’tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah wa kulli ‘aynin lammah

I seek refuge for myself in the complete words of Allah from every devil and every creature and from every evil eye.

I place myself in the protection of the Living, the Self-Sufficient who never dies and I drive evil away from myself with “there is no strength nor might except in Allah the Sublime the Almighty” a billion times over.

4. Prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ

On the Works of Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

What is our position on the works of Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah?

The way of our predecessors was not to hold a bad opinion of anyone and not to speak badly about anyone in the knowledge that Allah will take everyone to account for their words or actions. At times they would warn people of certain books which contained errors or incorrect positions. They would accept the truth and reject falsehood whoever it came from. We never heard our great teachers in Hadramawt attacking Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah. They would sometimes mention his positions, especially when speaking to those who venerate him. They would use his teachings to heal them and bring them back to the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama`ah. When we went outside Hadramawt, we heard people condemning him and calling him an innovator or disbeliever for the first time. We had never heard this from our teachers in Hadramawt.

Weekly Ṣalawāt: Yā Bāri’

Allāhumma yā Allāhu yā Bāri’ ṣalli `alā `abdika wa ḥabībika sayyidinā Muḥammad akrami man bara`ta wa `alā ālihi wa ṣaḥbihi wa sallim tasliman wa athbitnī `indaka fī khayr al-barīyati faḍlan wa iḥsāna.

O Allāh, O Originator, bestow abundant prayers and peace upon Your slave and beloved, our Master Muḥammad, the Prophet, the most noble of people who You brought into existence and upon his Family and Companions and make me among the best of people in Your sight out of Your bounty and kindness.

Dhikr to Remove Disturbing Images from the Mind

Answered by Sayyidi al-Ḥabīb `Umar bin Hafīẓ (may Allāh preserve him and benefit us by him).

What dhikr can be read to remove disturbing images from the mind?

Read regularly:

Allāhu ma’ī, Allāhu shāhidī, Allāhu hāḍirī, Allāhu qarībun minnī, Allāh naẓirun ilayya

Allah is with me, Allah witnesses me, Allah is present with me, Allah is near me, Allah is watching me.

Read 100 times a day:

Huw’Allāhu’lladhī lā ilāha illā hu, ‘Ālimu’l ghaybi wash-shahādah, Hu arrahmānu’ rahīm

He is Allāh, there is no god other than Him, knower of the unseen and the seen, He is the All-Compassionate, the All-Merciful. (Al-Ḥashr, 59:22)

Bestow abundant prayers upon the Prophet . While doing so imagine that you are in the Blessed Rawḍah or in front of the Ka`bah. All of this will purify the heart and remove disturbing images.
