Every morning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask his Lord to make him someone who was rightly guided and a guide to others. In this prayer, Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah preserve him and benefit us by him) teaches us to seek guidance for ourselves and others from Allah through the means and light of our guide, His Beloved ﷺ.
This prayer is taken from Habib Umar’s collection of prayers using Allah’s beautiful names in which he calls upon Allah by His beautiful names and then asks Him to bestow prayers upon His Beloved by those names. Finally, he asks Allah for a portion of those attributes which belong to Allah and which He has bestowed upon His Messenger ﷺ.
اللَّهُمَّ يا اللهُ يا هادي صَلِّ على عَبْدِكَ و حَبِيبِكَ سَيِّدِنا مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الهادي و على آلِهِ و صَحْبِهِ و سَلِّمْ تَسْلِيماً، و اهْدِني بِهِ سُبُلَ السَّلام، و اهْدِني بِهِ إلى صِرَاطِكَ المُسْتَقِيم، و اهْدِني و اهْدِ بِي لِنُورِكَ، و اهْدِني بِهِ إِلَيْكَ و اجْعَلْني بِهِ هادياً مَهْدِيَّاً
O Allah, O Guide, bestow abundant prayers and peace upon Your slave and beloved, our Master Muhammad, the Prophet, the guide and upon his Family and Companions. Guide me by him to the ways of salvation and to Your Straight Path. Guide me and guide people by me to Your light. Guide me to You and make me someone who is rightly guided and a guide to others.
