A Short Prayer Upon the Prophet ﷺ

Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz was asked for a simple prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ that it is easy to recite consistently

He advised reciting this prayer which he received from his teacher, Habib Muhammad bin `Alawi bin Shihab:

Allahumma salli wa sallim `ala sayyidina Muhammad annabiyyi’l ummi bi `adadi `ilmik

O Allah, bestow prayers and peace upon our Master Muhammad, the Unlettered Prophet according to the extent of Your knowledge.

Prayer Upon the Prophet ﷺ for Rabi al-Awwal 1438

rabi-salawaat

Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz recommends reciting the following prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ  10,000 times in Rabi al-Awwal:

Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barik `ala sayyidina Muhammad al-fatih lima ughliq al-khatim lima sabaq nasiri’l-haqqi bi’l-haqq wa’l-hadi ila siratika’l-mustaqim sall’Allahu `alayhi wa `ala alihi wa sahbihi haqqa qadrihi wa miqdarihi’l-`azim

O Allah, bestow Your prayers, peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad, the one who opens that which is closed, the seal of those that came before, the defender of truth with truth and the guide to Your straight path (and upon his Family and Companions), in accordance with the greatness of his rank.

This prayer is known as Salat al-Fatih, which is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna `Ali bin Abi Talib. It was then taken on by Shaykh Abu Hasan al-Bakri and later Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani, who both taught it to their students.

Habib Umar said that those calling to Allah have received many openings after repeating this prayer.

Salat for the Night of Badr

Advice from Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him) on the night of Badr – recite this prayer in abundance:

O Living, O Sustainer, bestow prayers and peace upon Your Beloved, our Master Muhammad and upon his Family and Companions and by him come to my aid!

How Many of My Prayers Should I Make for You?

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka`b said to the Prophet ﷺ: “I bestow prayers upon you and do so in abundance. How many of my prayers should I make for you?” What is the meaning of this statement?

The scholars say there are several possible meanings. The meaning which is closest to the wording of the hadith is ‘how much of the reward of my prayers should I donate to you?’

A second possible meaning is ‘how many of all my duas should I make for you?’

A third meaning is ‘how much of my time should I spend bestowing prayers upon you?’

The first meaning encompasses the other two meanings.

When Ubayy said that he would make all his prayers for the Prophet, the Prophet said to him: “If you do that, your worries will be removed and your sins will be forgiven.”[1]

Every prayer contains goodness and blessings. Any prayer which is recited with love, yearning and veneration is of great benefit regardless of the form.

Priority should be given to the salawat that have been narrated in the Sunnah (such as al-Salat al-Ibrahimiyyah), then the salawat that have been narrated by the early generations or salawat that your Shaykh recommends.

Ya Sabur (the Most Patient)

Allah says: “Those who patiently persevere will receive a reward without measure.” (39:10) In this prayer, Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah preserve him and benefit us by him), teaches us to ask Allah through the Prophet, the most patient of people, to make us among those who patiently persevere and thus receive a reward without measure.

O Allah, the Most Patient, bestow abundant prayers and peace upon Your slave and beloved, our Master Muhammad, the most patient Prophet, and upon his Family and Companions. By him make me among the patient who are given their reward without measure accompanied with goodness, kindness and wellbeing out of Your grace and generosity.

Ya Rashid (the Guide to what is right)

We continue our journey through Sayyidi Habib Umar’s collection of prayers using Allah’s beautiful names. In this collection, Habib Umar calls upon Allah by His beautiful names and then asks Him to bestow prayers upon His Beloved by those names. Finally, he asks Allah for a portion of those attributes which belong to Allah and which He has bestowed upon His Messenger ﷺ.

O Allah, the Guide to what is right, bestow abundant prayers and peace upon Your slave and beloved, our Master Muhammad, the Prophet, the rightly guided one and upon his Family and Companions. By him inspire me to do what is right and allow me to spread guidance to all people – both the elite and ordinary people – and by him arrange my affairs in the right way.

Ya Warith (the Inheritor)

Allah says: “then We gave the Book as inheritance to those whom We chose of Our servants.” (35:32) In this prayer, Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah preserve him and benefit us by him), teaches us to seek our portion of that inheritance.

O Allah, the Inheritor, bestow abundant prayers and peace upon Your slave and beloved, our Master Muhammad, the Prophet, the greatest inheritor of Your mighty and noble Book, the guardian of all other books, and the greatest transmitter of its secrets, and upon his Family and Companions. Bless me with a vast portion of his inheritance.
