Dhikr for Someone Close to Death

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

What dhikr can we give someone who is close to death?

They can recite the following 40 times and then repeat this at intervals:

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min az-zalimin

There is no deity other than You. Transcendent are You. Truly I am one of the wrongdoers.

Verses of Poetry to Recite in Times of Hardship

WhatsApp-Image-20160722

Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz recommends repeating these verses of poetry especially in times of difficulty. They are recited before and after Fajr in Dar al-Mustafa and after Isha. He composed them in Madinah al-Munawwarah on 29th Rabi’ al Awwal 1437 :

You are my reliance, You are my support, You are my saviour from all hardship

I turn my whole being to You – rush to My Aid, O Most Great!

Make easy the means for all good and remove all difficulties

And open for us all doors with Your support, O Most Generous

And foil the plot of every schemer and rebellious tyrant

And every envious and stubborn enemy, by the right and secret of “Ta Sin Mim”

(“Ta Sin Mim” are the letters which appear at the begin of Surat Al-Shu’ara and Surat Al-Qasas)

Prayers to Recite for Illness

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

What can be recited for those who are suffering from illness?

The following things can be recited:

  1. Recite the following six verses of healing from the Qur’an. The sick person can recite them in the morning and evening or they can be read over water and drunk in the morning and evening:

  1. The following prayer upon the Prophet (al-Salat al-Tibbiyyah) can also be recited in the same way:

Allahumma salli `ala sayyidina Muhammad tibbi’l-qulubi wa dawa’iha wa afiyati-l’abdani wa shifa’iha wa quti’l-arwahi wa ghidha’iha wa nuri’l-absari wa diya’iha wa `ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim

O Allah bestow your peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad and upon his Family and Companions, the source of medicine and healing for people’s hearts, the source of health and well-being for people’s bodies, the source of nourishment for people’s souls and the source of light for people’s vision.

Ya Latifan bi khalqihi ya `Aliman bi khalqihi ya Khabiran bi khalqihi ultuf bina ya Latifu ya `Alimu ya Khabiru

O One Who is gentle with His creation, O One who has complete knowledge of His creation, O One who has complete awareness of His creation! Treat us with gentleness O Gentle, O All-Knowing, O All-Aware!

  1. Repeat twenty times in the morning and evening:

On Relief from Severe Affliction

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him).

I suffer from a severe affliction. I have visited the pious, and have asked Allah for relief from this. What is the way out of this affliction?

The answer is to absolutely lower yourself to Allah and turn to Allah completely. Also try to relieve the hardships of those around you, according to your ability. Try to make other people happy. Go to the needy people that no-one cares about and honour them and treat them well. These are some of the most effective means of relieving afflictions. You must also have trust in your Lord, and remain at His door in a state of brokenness, pleading with Him and beseeching Him, and He will respond to you. Do not be hasty in concluding that “I supplicated and He did not respond to me.” Prayers to Allah in the night are arrows which do not miss their target, but those prayers are only answered at the time which Allah has decreed. Remember that Allah afflicts and tests His servants for a purpose. Perhaps they will find great goodness in that affliction that they would not have found had they not been through it. So have etiquette with your Lord and have hope in Him.

On Dealing with Mental Illness Amongst the Youth

Answered by Sayyidi al-Ḥabīb `Umar bin Hafīẓ (may Allāh preserve him and benefit us by him).

How should we deal with mental illness amongst our youth? Is there a light dhikr that people can read that can ease their state?

In general any dhikr or prayer upon the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) is beneficial in this regard. The following adhkar can be read specifically:

Read 100 times a day:

Rabbi-shraḥ lī ṣadrī wa yassir lī amrī

(“My Lord bring tranquillity to my heart and give me ease in my affair.” Ta Ha 20:25-26)

Read 70-450 times a day according to the need:

Hasbunallāhu wa n`am al-wakīl

(“Allah is enough for us and He is the best One in whom we place our trust.” Al `Imrān 3.173)

Read 11-100 times a day:

wa ufawwiḍu amrī ila’llāh inna’llāha baṣirun bi’l`ibād

(“I resign my affair to Allah, Allah is fully aware of (His) slaves.” Ghāfir 40.44)

Read Surat al-Inshirāḥ (94) and Ayat al-Kursī after every prayer.

Surat al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq and al-Nās are also effective in warding off different types of harm.
