Prayers to Recite for Illness

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

What can be recited for those who are suffering from illness?

The following things can be recited:

  1. Recite the following six verses of healing from the Qur’an. The sick person can recite them in the morning and evening or they can be read over water and drunk in the morning and evening:

  1. The following prayer upon the Prophet (al-Salat al-Tibbiyyah) can also be recited in the same way:

Allahumma salli ‘ala sayyidina Muhammad tibbi’l-qulubi wa dawa’iha wa ‘afiyati-l’abdani wa shifa’iha wa quti’l-arwahi wa ghidha’iha wa nuri’l-absari wa diya’iha wa `ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim

O Allah bestow your peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad and upon his Family and Companions, the source of medicine and healing for people’s hearts, the source of health and well-being for people’s bodies, the source of nourishment for people’s souls and the source of light for people’s vision.

  1. Repeat the following in abundance:

Ya Latifan bi khalqihi ya ‘Aliman bi khalqihi ya Khabiran bi khalqihi ultuf bina ya Latifu ya ‘Alimu ya Khabir

O One Who is gentle with His creation, O One who has complete knowledge of His creation, O One who has complete awareness of His creation! Treat us with gentleness O Gentle, O All-Knowing, O All-Aware!

  1. Repeat twenty times in the morning and evening:
