Dealing with Unpleasant Things

Habib Abdullah bin Husayn bin Tahir (may Allah have mercy on him and benefit us by him) wrote the following piece of advice to help people deal with the oppression and turmoil that was taking place in Hadramawt at the time. His advice remains relevant to the times in which we are living.

It is rare in this time to find peace of mind and comfort. Worries, concerns and distractions are numerous. A person must be content and tranquil in the face of these things. He must surrender (to Allah’s decree) and not be dissatisfied. Continue reading Dealing with Unpleasant Things

On Removing Scary Thoughts

Answered by Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him)

What can be recited to remove scary thoughts?

When you experience these thoughts, recite the following Surahs: Quraysh, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and al-Nas. If this continues, recite verse 154 of Surat Al `Imran (3:154).

Finally, he asks Allah for a portion of those attributes which belong to Allah and which He has bestowed upon His Messenger ﷺ. Insights into Purification: Water and Impurities

When water is mixed with other substances it takes on the properties of those substances and is thus no longer fit to be used for purification. When it is mixed with impure substances it becomes impure. Likewise we must be careful who we mix with so that we do not take on negative attributes and lose our purity.

A small amount of water easily becomes impure, but when more water is added to it until it becomes a large amount, it is now pure and can be used for purification. For that reason we are encouraged to come together for worship. When there are a large number of us our impurities are diluted until they are no longer manifest.

Extracts from Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz’s classes on the rulings and etiquettes of purification from Habib Abdullah bin Husayn Balfaqih’s “Kifayat al-Raghib” in Shafi fiqh.
